London Stock Exchange Plans Overnight Trading Venue to Match Crypto Competition

The London Stock Exchange plans to set up a separate night trading venue in the first half of 2027, opening up extra hours to face rising competition from 24/7 crypto platforms and round-the-clock US stock markets.

Operating between 17:00 and 07:50 London time, the proposed venue will function alongside standard trading periods from 08:00 to 16:30. Initially, the exchange intends to support exchange-traded funds and equity-tracking products before evaluating the addition of further asset classes.

Why the London Stock Exchange is expanding its hours

The move responds directly to demand from everyday retail investors using mobile apps to trade outside normal working hours. Traditional financial markets face steady pressure from digital asset venues that stay open continuously without weekend breaks or overnight pauses.

Throughout 2026, American financial markets lead significant regulatory and technical initiatives to introduce nearly continuous 24/5 equity operations, catering to a global investor base. Several important developments have accelerated the transition toward perpetual market participation.

For example, Nasdaq secured SEC authorization on April 10, 2026, for its “Night Session,” extending the trading window to 23 hours daily for all NMS equities. Simultaneously, the NYSE progressed its NYSE Arca strategy by detailing frameworks for a 23-hour weekday schedule running from 21:00 to 20:00 ET. Additionally, Cboe EDGX Equities Exchange finalized its SEC filings to migrate to 23×5 operations, eyeing a launch in late 2026 supported by enhanced data infrastructure..

After-Hours planning may be used upcoming sessions

Many market participants may utilize the quieter post-market environment to analyze performance and prepare for the next opening session.

This routine focuses on four key areas which are evaluating successful trades and their drivers, ensuring strict adherence to personal trading protocols, identifying specific errors to prevent future recurrence, and establishing potential price targets for the morning based on current futures movement and late-night market data.

Meanwhile, 21Shares began trading its Bitcoin-Gold ETP, BOLD, on the London Stock Exchange on January 13, 2026, marking the first UK-listed product combining both assets. Since its 2022 Swiss debut, BOLD has returned 122.5% in sterling terms. It trades intraday with a 0.65% expense ratio, arriving as UK crypto ETPs post-October 2025 deregulation drew $280 million in first-month volume.
