Kaia Targets Ship Finance Tokenization Through New Partnership

Kaia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Pinetree, the Singapore subsidiary of Hanwha Investment & Securities, and real-world asset tokenization firm Galactica to bring ship financing onto the blockchain.

The partnership will begin with ship financing projects in Indonesia, where the three companies will jointly manage the full tokenization process, from sourcing assets and structuring investment products to issuing tokens, distributing them to investors, and meeting regulatory requirements.

Under the agreement, Galactica will identify assets and structure investment products, Kaia will provide blockchain infrastructure for token issuance, settlement, and lifecycle management, while Pinetree will oversee regulatory compliance in Singapore and connect the offerings with investors.

Galactica, founded by Kaia and Indonesian shipping company PT Pelayaran Korindo, already operates Pegasus, a tokenization platform backed by LNG carrier financing. The company said it intends to grow beyond shipping into infrastructure assets and other financial products.

Kaia Chairman Seo Sang-min said the partnership supports the company’s goal of becoming a complete on-chain financial infrastructure provider covering both stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.

Indonesia becomes the starting point

The partners selected Indonesia for the first project, focusing on ship financing, an asset class that often requires large amounts of capital and long investment periods.

Kim Yung-young, CEO of Galactica, said the Pegasus platform has already demonstrated the feasibility of tokenizing ship financing and that the partnership will help introduce more real-world assets from Indonesia to global investors.

Pinetree CEO Lee Sang-won added that Singapore’s regulatory framework and the firm’s international network would help connect compliant investment products with overseas investors.

Why shipping is becoming a focus for tokenization

Shipping finance is the business of funding commercial ships such as cargo vessels, oil tankers, and LNG carriers. These investments have usually been limited to banks and large institutional investors because they require significant capital.

Blockchain companies are trying to change that by turning ownership of these assets into digital tokens. This allows a single ship or financing deal to be divided into smaller shares that more investors can buy.

Shipping has become one of the first sectors to test this model because ships can generate steady income through long-term contracts. That makes it easier to estimate their value and build investment products around them.

Meanwhile, Kaia Partners introduced Yield8, a tokenized yield product designed to channel capital into Asian private credit markets through blockchain-based infrastructure, as RWA demand continues to grow across decentralized finance.
