Ethereum Foundation Stakes ETH for First Time, Moves $10M to New Address

The Ethereum Foundation has begun staking ETH for the first time in its history, marking a significant shift in how the organization manages its treasury. On-chain data from Arkham Intelligence shows the Foundation staked ETH three weeks ago and, most recently, transferred 5,000 ETH worth approximately $10.38 million to a new address on March 14, 2026.

The Foundation’s total ETH holdings stand at 169,863 ETH valued at roughly $386 million, with additional positions in wrapped ETH variants like aEthWETH and WETH adding tens of millions more. The recent 5,000 ETH transfer to a fresh address has sparked speculation about further staking activity, as the Foundation appears to be actively participating in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus for the first time.

The Ethereum Foundation staked 72,000 Ether using its new DVT-lite system to simplify institutional staking, while also selling 5,000 ETH for about $10.2 million to BitMine Immersion Technologies to fund research and ecosystem development. Meanwhile, Ethereum’s staking reward rate is currently about 1.91% annually, slightly down from 1.99% a month earlier.

First-time staking signals strategic shift

The Ethereum Foundation has historically held ETH in liquid form without staking, preserving flexibility for grants, development, and ecosystem support. The decision to stake now comes amid evolving treasury management practices across major crypto entities.

Staking locks ETH to secure the network and earn rewards, potentially generating sustainable yield for the Foundation while contributing to Ethereum’s security.

$10M transfer fuels speculation

Arkham data reveals the 5,000 ETH transfer occurred at 16:00 UTC on March 14, with the funds sent to an address linked to beacon chain deposit contracts. Earlier March activity included smaller ETH deposits of 0.025 ETH and 24.546 ETH to similar contracts. If the new address follows the same pattern, it would add meaningfully to the Foundation’s staked position.

The Foundation has not publicly commented on the transactions or its staking intentions. Notably, in a post on X, the Ethereum Foundation shared that it has made an initial deposit of 2,016 ETH and plans to stake around 70,000 ETH in total.
