Sei Labs, the core development team behind the Sei blockchain, has introduced a new proposal aimed at phasing out Cosmos-style transactions and CosmWasm smart contracts in favour of fully adopting the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The initiative seeks to streamline Sei’s architecture and improve accessibility for developers building on the network.
This shift is formalized through Sei Improvement Proposal-3 (SIP-3), representing the second submission under Sei’s recently launched on-chain governance process. If the proposal passes, Sei would become a fully EVM-based blockchain, abandoning its current dual-account model that supports both Cosmos and EVM addresses.
Highlighting the motivation behind the move, Jay Jog, co-founder of Sei Labs, stated, “As EVM usage continues to dominate activity on Sei, this proposal reflects a clear path forward: a streamlined, EVM-first architecture designed to scale the next generation of DeFi, gaming, and real-world applications.”
Under SIP-3, only EVM addresses could send transactions on the network, while support for CosmWasm contracts and Cosmos-style message handling would be removed. Despite this, essential blockchain functions such as staking and governance would still be preserved through EVM precompiles, ensuring continuity for key protocol operations.
Sei Labs emphasized that the current dual system has created friction for users and developers, as it requires managing and linking two separate address formats. Should the proposal be approved, infrastructure providers will need to adopt EVM-only APIs, users will be required to migrate assets to EVM-compatible wallets or bridge out Cosmos-based tokens, and CosmWasm developers will need to port their apps to the EVM environment.
Sei Labs argues that moving to an EVM-only setup will simplify network operations, reduce infrastructure overhead, and allow the blockchain to better integrate with the broader EVM ecosystem.
In parallel development within the Ethereum ecosystem, Vitalik Buterin has invited researchers to contribute to the Poseidon cryptanalysis program. This initiative comes as Ethereum developers consider incorporating the specialized hash function into the network, highlighting ongoing efforts to optimize Ethereum’s cryptographic foundations.
