Blockchain data analytics platform CoinGecko has issued a warning about a fake airdrop scam that appears to be linked to it.
In an August 21 post on X, CoinGecko warned its followers about deceptive claims regarding a GECKO token airdrop, stressing that the company has no intentions of launching such an initiative.
“This is NOT true. CoinGecko does not have any tokens or airdrop plans at the moment. Always stay vigilant and double-check your sources before clicking any links,”
the CoinGecko team wrote in the post.

The prevalence of fraudulent and deceptive tactics like this—exploiting the reputations of well-established platforms to deceive users—has been on the rise lately in the crypto space. At the same time, preventative and deterrent initiatives have also been instituted to curb the menace. Operation Spincaster, one of these initiatives launched by blockchain analytics and forensics firm Chainalysis, recently announced the results of its activities so far, uncovering widespread “approval phishing” attacks across six countries, including Australia.
Following this report, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation into a large-scale cryptocurrency phishing operation that compromised over 2,000 Australian-owned digital wallets. The AFP Detective Superintendent Tim Stainton emphasized the Operation’s crucial intelligence, which will help identify victims and disrupt illegal activities. The AFP stated that its Policing Cybercrime Coordination Center (PCCC) joined Chainalysis’s initiative in June 2024, and these investigations are part of ongoing efforts to resolve cases and enhance protections for Australian citizens.
