Amazon is ramping up its artificial intelligence infrastructure with a planned $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania, where it aims to build two massive data centres.
The tech giant revealed on June 9 that while Salem Township and Falls Township are currently the leading contenders for the project, other sites across the state remain under evaluation.

The move underscores Amazon’s aggressive push to bolster its computing capacity as the global AI arms race intensifies. In recent months, major players such as Meta and OpenAI have made similar announcements: Meta is exploring a new data centre campus for AI initiatives, and OpenAI is committing $500 million to AI infrastructure development over the next four years. This infrastructure will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefits for the entire world.
Beyond just bricks and servers, Amazon is tying its investment to community development. The company says it will partner with Pennsylvania’s educational institutions and workforce organizations to create a pipeline of tech talent. Planned initiatives include technician training, fibre optic splicing workshops, and STEM-focused programs for K-12 students—all tailored to support the growing demand for expertise in cloud computing and data infrastructure.
“Our strategic investments in advanced computing infrastructure and specialized AI hardware are building the technology backbone for the next generation of generative and agentic AI,”
Amazon said in its statement.
“And helping to secure America’s position at the forefront of global innovation.”
The Pennsylvania announcement follows a similar move in North Carolina earlier this month, where Amazon pledged $10 billion toward expanding its AI and cloud data infrastructure, signaling a coast-to-coast commitment to solidifying its dominance in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
Additionally, Meta received approval from the European Data Protection Board to train its artificial intelligence models using publicly shared content from its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
