Linea has begun covering layer-2 gas fees for users who bridge assets from the Ethereum mainnet using its native bridge, marking a strategic move to streamline onboarding and enhance accessibility.
Announced in a recent X post, the initiative is designed to lower entry barriers for new users by reducing transaction costs, though it does come with specific usage limitations.
⚠️ Limitations to note:
– Only applies to L1→L2 transactions
– Covers transactions using less than 250k gas
– USDC bridging (via Circle’s CCTP) not included
– Users still pay gas for the L1 transaction itself— Linea.eth (@LineaBuild) May 7, 2025
Developed by Consensys—the team behind widely used Ethereum tools like MetaMask and Infura—Linea is a zero-knowledge layer-2 network built to help developers scale Ethereum applications more efficiently. By offering lower transaction fees and faster processing speeds, Linea aims to simplify decentralized app deployment and improve the overall user experience on Ethereum.
The gas fee waiver, however, is restricted to Ethereum-to-Linea transfers conducted exclusively through Linea’s native bridge. The team clarified that the offer only applies to layer-1 to layer-2 transactions consuming less than 250,000 gas.
Additionally, it excludes USD Coin (USDC) transfers made through Circle’s CCTP, and users are still required to cover Ethereum mainnet gas fees out of pocket.
This means participants must continue paying mainnet gas costs, ranging from $2 to $20, depending on network traffic. The 250,000 gas ceiling effectively limits the waived layer-2 fee to approximately $20 to $45 based on average fee rates, highlighting the initiative’s intent to assist with smaller, more common transfers.
In early April, Linea ecosystem lead Declan Fox addressed growing community sentiment in a public post responding to the results of an internal poll. With over 1,000 users participating, most anticipated a token generation event (TGE) or airdrop. Fox acknowledged the community’s feedback, noting the need to improve communication, reignite excitement across the ecosystem, and raise overall standards.
Further supporting its long-term vision, Linea established the Linea Association last year, an independent Swiss non-profit overseeing the network’s development, growth, and path toward decentralized governance. This organizational step underscores Linea’s commitment to community-led evolution.
