Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, has expressed no intention of returning to the role despite receiving support from the crypto community following a suggestion for a pardon.
On December 2, CZ responded to a post by John Lilic, the Executive Director of the Telos Foundation, who recommended that President-elect Donald Trump consider pardoning him because of his past criminal charges and the subsequent four-month prison sentence.

Lilic’s post stated, “President @realDonaldTrump should consider a pardon for @cz_binance so he can return to being the CEO of @binance and help the crypto industry mature.” He referred to CZ as a “victim of lawfare,” referencing the legal challenges that led to his conviction.
While CZ acknowledged the suggestion, he firmly clarified that he had no desire to reclaim his position as Binance’s CEO. Despite this, he expressed no objection to possibly receiving a pardon.
The post garnered a wave of support from crypto enthusiasts, many urging a return of CZ to a leadership role in the crypto sector. Several users suggested that CZ could still play a pivotal role in the future of cryptocurrency, either as a government figure or a leader of the industry at large. One comment emphasized,
“Yes, CZ definitely deserves the spot in the government to bring mass #crypto adoption.”
Notably, CZ has voiced concerns about the growing popularity of meme coins in cryptocurrency. In a November 26 post on X, he described the meme coin trend as “a little odd” and urged blockchain developers to focus on creating utility-based projects with long-term, practical value. “Instead of chasing hype, creators should prioritize building meaningful applications that can contribute to the growth and maturity of the crypto industry,” he said.
