The Avalanche blockchain network recently experienced a downtime that disrupted the network’s primary blockchain, C-Chain, causing a major disruption for users and projects built on the network. The project’s developers have since sprung into action to investigate the cause and find a solution.
The network’s inability to process transactions effectively brought all activity on the blockchain to an immediate halt. However, some subnets were not affected by the outage.
Further investigations by developers and the wider community pinpointed the root cause, and the current working theory is that the disruption was related to inscriptions. More information is expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
In a post on X, Ava Labs co-founder Kevin Sekniqi speculated that the most likely cause of the outage was due to a “gossip-related mempool management bug.” He further stated that the bug was purely related to code rather than an inability of the network to handle a spike in usage.
The network downtime caused a significant drop in the price of AVAX, with the price falling by 1.3% just a few minutes after the outage was reported, almost 3% on the day, and a worrying 12% over the week. This outage is similar to the Solana offline that happened earlier this month.
It’s unclear whether the software upgrade played a role in the network’s outage. Validator operators had been upgrading to the Durango release, which was made available on Wednesday.
According to data from snowpeer.io, approximately 17% of the network’s 1,838 validators have already upgraded to the new client production code, version 1.11.0. The Durango upgrade is scheduled to be activated on March 6, 2024.
