According to the OECD’s findings, professions that require extensive training or tertiary degrees are particularly susceptible to AI. Among these high-skill, white-collar positions, business professionals, managers, top executives, and science and engineering specialists are deemed to be the most exposed to AI capabilities.
While the researchers acknowledged that their research was conducted before the release of advanced language models such as ChatGPT, they suggested that generative AI will expand the scope of activities and occupations that can be automated.
According to the report, AI may replace certain human labour in specific roles, but it also has the potential to create new employment opportunities that leverage human skills.
Furthermore, an OECD survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the use of AI at work can benefit employees in terms of job satisfaction, health, and compensation. The survey focused on participants from the manufacturing and banking sectors and found a significant gap between workers’ current perceptions of AI use in the workplace and their anxieties about the future.
The researchers concluded that the overall impact of AI on employment remains uncertain, as it can both reduce labor demand through increased productivity and create new roles. However, they stated that it is important to start planning for the future of work now, so that governments and businesses can be prepared for the changes that AI is likely to bring.
