The meeting focused on the openness of AI systems, the importance of assessing and certifying the safety of AI, and ensuring that AI is protected from dangerous actors. It was suggested that the government and tech CEOs agree on the need for increased efforts to create and ensure adequate safeguards and protections for AI. President Joe Biden stopped by the meeting to thank the CEOs, noting that what they are working on has enormous potential as well as danger. On the same day, the Biden administration announced its plan to allocate $140 million to establish seven new National AI Research Institutes, bringing the total number of these institutions across the nation to 25. The White House emphasized that these institutes will play a critical role in strengthening the country’s AI research capabilities and developing new technologies. The government hopes that these efforts will also help address concerns about the risks associated with AI and ensure that the technology is used for the benefit of all Americans.
In another development, European Commission has established a new research division to examine the effects of algorithms used by well-known online platforms and search engines such as Facebook and Google.
