The English Premier League has entered into a four-year licensing agreement with Sorare, a French startup that creates blockchain-based fantasy sports games. This is a significant step for Sorare, as the English football league is among the most-watched sports leagues globally.
All 20 clubs in the English Premier League will have cards in the game based on their players, featuring new gameplay elements such as league-specific competitions, draft-based gaming, and a salary-cap option.
Sorare, an NFT-based fantasy sports platform, has collaborated with several high-profile football leagues, including Serie A in Italy, La Liga in Spain, Bundesliga in Germany, and MLS in the US, to produce football player trading cards.
Each card is registered as a unique token on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing for card trading and buying among Sorare players. Players can select a starting lineup of five players and earn points based on their actual performances.
According to Richard Masters, the Premier League’s CEO, the league constantly seeks new ways to connect with its audience as fan behavior changes. Sorare’s digital cards and online game provide a fresh approach.
Sorare recently announced the addition of two new gaming features: the ability to compete with league-specific player cards and a financial fair play function that prevents users from selecting all-star teams.
Nicolas Julia, Sorare’s co-founder and CEO, stated that his company stands apart from other cryptocurrency startups due to its use of tokens in a fantasy game that has attracted over 3 million players since its establishment in 2018.
Sorare’s revenues in 2022 increased by 50% compared to the previous years. In recent months, the startup has also partnered with the NBA and MLB to cater to sports fans who don’t follow football.
