Truckers protesting the recent COVID-19 policy in Canada have taken their fundraising activities to Bitcoin-based crowdfunding platform Tallycoin after Gofundme bans them. With the political pressure that emanated from the different schools of thought concerning the protest, Gofundme decided to remove the campaign from the group.
Once the campaign was withdrawn by Gofundme after claiming that it violated its terms and conditions, the fundraising company requested that donors request reimbursement. This led to an intensified attack on the company. Gofundme decided to reimburse the donors automatically.
Immediately after the campaign was banned, the group of protesters decided to use a Bitcoin-based crowdfunding platform, Tallycoin, to raise funds for their campaign.
According to the protest’s fundraising page on Tallycoin,
“The Canadian Bitcoin community would like to have a second financial access point for #FreedomConvoy2022. Legacy financial infrastructure can sometimes be politicized and clamped down upon, whereas Bitcoin is a truly censorship-resistant method of communicating value. Don’t allow your voices to be silenced, and don’t allow your financial sovereignty to be trampled upon.
Love, unity, and freedom – let’s raise some hard money for hard workers.”
As at the time of writing this, the group had raised over $300,000. It is unclear if the funds raised via Tallycoin will undergo similar treatments once it is converted to fiat.
The Freedom Convoy campaign started in 2022 because of the recent COVID-19 requirement given to cross-border truckers in Canada. Canadian authorities believe that truckers must be vaccinated before they can embark on cross-border transportation within the country. The campaign has grown to encompass others that believe that vaccine and mask requirements were not necessary for a democratic environment. More protesters believe that prescriptive public health measures are against their human rights.
