Quick Breakdown:
- New Proof-of-Transit Timestamping (PoTT) could enable Bitcoin transfers between Earth and Mars in as little as three minutes.
- PoTT uses satellites, lunar relays, and optical links to create an auditable trail for interplanetary Bitcoin payments.
- Futures data shows retail traders now drive Bitcoin market sentiment as institutional activity declines.
A new proposal suggests Bitcoin could become the first currency to operate across planets, with transfers from Earth to Mars potentially completed in just three minutes.

Proof-of-Transit Timestamping Introduced
Tech entrepreneur Jose E. Puente and researcher Carlos Puente have introduced Proof-of-Transit Timestamping (PoTT), a framework designed to make Bitcoin transactions interplanetary. Detailed in a recent white paper, PoTT outlines how Bitcoin payments could travel through a chain of antennas, satellites, and lunar relays, with each station “stamping” the transaction before it continues.
Puente explained that PoTT acts as a “receipt layer” for Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, while leveraging existing optical communication links developed by NASA, Starlink, and other satellite providers. He emphasized that the technology itself is already mature what’s missing is a permanent Earth–Mars communication channel.
“With PoTT, the moment there’s a stable Earth–Mars link, Bitcoin can move across planets. Lightning transfers could arrive in as little as three minutes, or 22 minutes in the worst case,”
Puente said
Overcoming Interplanetary Obstacles
A major challenge for interplanetary communication is the blackout period that occurs every 26 months, when the Sun blocks direct signals between Earth and Mars for about two weeks. Puente suggested that relay satellites could be deployed to route transactions around the Sun, maintaining continuous connectivity.
Unlike traditional Bitcoin timestamping, PoTT records each “hop” a transaction takes, providing an auditable trail similar to passport stamps at border crossings. This transparency ensures users can verify when and where their payments traveled before arriving at their Martian destination.
Puente believes a convincing demonstration could be run today by simulating Martian-level delays. If implemented, Bitcoin would not only be the first decentralized currency on Earth but also the first interplanetary financial system.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s futures market is undergoing a structural shift. Retail traders are increasingly driving price dynamics as institutional players scale back activity. Despite steady accumulation by long-term investors, futures data points to weakening momentum, with bearish sentiment now dominating short-term positioning.
