Ronin, the blockchain network created by Sky Mavis, could soon undergo a major transformation as a new proposal outlines plans to build Ronin Layer 2 on the Arbitrum Orbit chain.
The move would mark a significant shift from its current layer-1 model toward becoming a full-fledged, Ethereum-aligned layer 2 by 2026.
According to the proposal, Arbitrum’s ecosystem is uniquely positioned to support Ronin’s transition, with the L2 stack offering dedicated Web3 gaming support through Arbitrum Gaming Ventures. If approved, the upgrade would see Ronin powered by its native token RON while benefiting from Orbit’s features, including customizable infrastructure, self-governance, optimized validator fee revenue, and high transaction throughput.
Today, we’ve formally proposed to the Ronin validator community that @Ronin_Network build with @arbitrum.

The Ronin team highlighted that Arbitrum Orbit is the only Ethereum L2 stack that provides native support for all four key ecosystem functions without relying on technical compromises such as workarounds or reduced upgradeability. This would give Ronin users faster transactions, stronger community support, and deeper integration into the Ethereum ecosystem—an advantage that could further accelerate Web3 gaming adoption.
The proposed migration is also expected to strengthen the utility of RON, expanding its role across the L2 environment.
Launched in 2021 to support Axie Infinity, Ronin initially ran on a proof-of-authority consensus model before upgrading to delegated proof-of-stake in 2023. Since then, it has evolved into an EVM-compatible network with features for gaming developers, including cross-chain token transfers, NFT interoperability, and DeFi applications.
More recently, Sky Mavis introduced Open Ronin via Project Leviosa, broadening the chain’s scope beyond gaming into DeFi, infrastructure, and consumer-facing applications. The upcoming transition to L2 aligns with Ronin’s long-term goal of becoming
“the gamification engine of Ethereum.”
Additionally, Ronin launched a $10 million grant initiative to foster gaming, DApps, and DeFi protocols innovation. On January 16, the Ronin Ecosystem Grants program was announced to attract developers and projects that can enhance the utility and capabilities of its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchain.
