Secretary of the Treasury Scott K.H. Bessent is set to travel to Switzerland on May 8 for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening the United States’ economic security and international economic relations.
In a statement ahead of his trip, Secretary Bessent emphasized the importance of economic security as a cornerstone of national security. “President Donald J. Trump is leading the way both at home and abroad for a stronger, more prosperous America,” Bessent said. “I look forward to productive talks as we work towards rebalancing the international economic system towards better serving the interests of the United States.”
During his visit, Secretary Bessent will meet with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. This meeting will build on their recent engagement at the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings, where both leaders discussed shared economic priorities and cooperation.
Switzerland, known for its pivotal role in global finance and diplomacy, serves as a strategic location for these discussions. The talks are expected to focus on enhancing bilateral economic ties, addressing global financial stability, and exploring avenues to promote fair trade and investment.
In addition to his meeting with President Keller-Sutter, Secretary Bessent will engage with the lead economic representative from the People’s Republic of China. Notably, the U.S. Treasury Department is restricting the activities of the Cambodia-based Huione Group within the American financial system. The Treasury alleges that Huione facilitates the laundering of billions of dollars in illicit funds, including those linked to North Korean cyber theft by the Lazarus Group
