Crypto Man, a highly anticipated South Korean film, is set to hit theatres on January 15, 2025.
The movie, inspired by real events surrounding a $34.9 billion cryptocurrency market collapse, explores the societal and financial fallout of the crisis.
According to South Korean media outlet JTBC, the movie’s director, Hyun Hae-ri, revealed that the plot is based on South Korea’s crypto crash, which wiped out more than 50 trillion Won in value. While Hyun refrained from naming the specific incident, she emphasized that many victims are still awaiting legal resolutions from the courts.
Hyun, who has received critical acclaim for her socially conscious works, such as Nine Times Fired, stated she aims to portray the story with realism and depth.
“I will present it as realistically as possible while also being sharp and include elements of dark comedy,”
Hyun stated.
She added that the production process involved extensive legal consultations to ensure accuracy.
The film stars the late actor Song Jae-rim as Yang Do-hyun, a young entrepreneur who navigates the turbulent world of startups and cryptocurrency. After experiencing multiple bankruptcies, Yang and his friend Ji-Woo succeeded in launching a cryptocurrency venture backed by hundreds of millions of Won. The altcoin “MOMMY” soars to massive popularity but draws scrutiny from regulators, leading to unforeseen challenges.
Crypto Man also highlights the growing obsession among South Korean youth with financial markets, portraying their dual lives of stock trading by day and crypto speculation by night.
A recent report from local exchanges Upbit and Bithumb revealed that over 185 South Koreans in their 20s held digital assets worth more than ₩1 billion (around $750,000) each by the end of 2023. This group represents the third-largest cohort of high-value crypto account holders, with their combined holdings totalling ₩967.2 billion (approximately $3.91 million per person).
