David Marcus, former president of PayPal and current CEO of Lightspark, has publicly endorsed former President Donald Trump for re-election.
In a post on the social media platform X, Marcus expressed his support for the Republican Party, stating that he had reached this decision after reassessing his views.
Marcus, who previously served as CEO at Meta and spearheaded the Libra digital currency project, noted that his shift in perspective began in 2019. Initially, he believed the Democratic Party aligned more with the people’s interests. However, he perceived that Republicans demonstrated a more significant concern for their constituents, while Democrats appeared more focused on consolidating government power and control.
Reflecting on his experiences, Marcus highlighted that Republicans showed a genuine interest in understanding Libra’s objectives and the implications of censorship in financial transactions. This made him feel increasingly aligned with their views, particularly regarding a commitment to meritocracy and opposition to a “weaponized” diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda.
Marcus also criticized the current administration’s policies, particularly its approach to immigration and the regulatory environment, which he believes stifles innovation in cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence. His critique underscores the urgent need for a president who upholds American values, supports the Constitution, fosters business growth, and encourages technological advancement.
In his endorsement, Marcus emphasised the need for leadership that prioritises the nation’s interests and supports innovation. This is a crucial quality that he believes Trump embodies and that the country needs at this critical juncture.
Meanwhile, at the Bitcoin 2024 conference, Trump pledged to elevate the U.S. as a cryptocurrency industry leader if re-elected, vowing regulatory reforms and a supportive environment for innovation, including firing SEC Chair Gary Gensler on his first day in office.
Notably, industry figures like Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, the Winklevoss twins, David Sacks, Chamath Palihapitiya, Cathie Wood, Cathie Wood, and David Bailey have publicly supported Trump’s candidacy, underscoring a growing wave of backing from influential voices in the tech and finance sectors.
