Japanese messaging giant LINE is set to launch mini-decentralized applications within its messaging platform through a partnership with the Kaia DLT Foundation, a UAE-based organization supporting the Kaia blockchain.
According to an announcement published on August 29, 2024, the initiative is introduced as part of the Kaia Wave initiative, launched to support Web3 developers.
The Kaia DLT Foundation noted that it hopes to encourage developers to create mini dApps specifically for LINE’s large user base in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Developers will utilize Kaia’s NEXT WEB software development kit to build these mini dApps, which will be integrated into the LINE Messenger app.
Young-su Ko, CEO of LINE NEXT, emphasized that the Kaia mainnet launch is pivotal for expanding the Asian Web3 ecosystem and will boost LINE NEXT’s global presence. He highlighted the Kaia Wave project’s role in providing an efficient Web3 platform and enhancing user accessibility.
Sangmin Seo, Chairman of the Kaia DLT Foundation, noted that the Kaia ecosystem will gain from new onboarding and marketing initiatives developed with partners like LINE NEXT. He also mentioned that the upcoming KSL 2024 event will demonstrate Kaia and LINE Messenger’s efforts to popularize blockchain and strengthen future collaboration.
The announcement further noted that LINE aims to capitalize on the trend of integrating blockchain-based applications into messaging platforms, a concept initially pioneered by Telegram. In 2023, Telegram introduced ‘Telegram Mini Apps’ and later enabled developers to integrate these apps with The Open Network blockchain. LINE’s new initiative seeks to follow this model and expand its blockchain offerings.
In a similar development, Catizen, a Telegram Mini App, partnered with Chinese giant HashKey Group. This partnership aimed to leverage The Open Network (TON) ecosystem for Web3 gaming and digital entertainment, with HashKey Global providing secure digital asset services to Catizen users. Ben El-Baz of HashKey Global noted increased developer activity on TON and emphasized the role of experienced teams in the decision to partner with Catizen.
