Nintendo has decided to avoid utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in its game development processes due to concerns surrounding intellectual property (IP) breaches.
During a recent shareholders’ general meeting, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, expressed his reservations about adopting generative AI for game development. According to Furukawa, generative AI tools show significant creative potential, but their application heavily relies on the datasets used to train the AI models. He added that there are potential IP infringement risks associated with using the technology.
When questioned about the company’s plans for using AI, Furukawa acknowledged that though there is an established synergy between game development and AI technology, they cannot fully rely on that to meet gamers’ expectations.
“We have decades of know-how to create the best gaming experience for our customers,”
He stated, reinforcing the company’s decision to avoid AI tools.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, Bitcoin developers are working to ensure that Nintendo’s legacy endures. A group of enthusiasts known as “ninjas” have recently integrated an emulator for the Nintendo 64 (N64) console onto the Bitcoin network. This endeavour forms part of a broader campaign to preserve classic video games utilizing blockchain technology.
Trevor Owens, CEO of Bitcoin Ordinals portfolio tracker Ninjalerts, spearheaded the “Pizza Ninjas” project, which utilised the Ordinals protocol to inscribe the N64 emulator on Bitcoin.
“We aim to engage preservationists in discussions about classic games and encourage the community to find legal ways to place critically endangered games onchain,”
Owens explained in recent social media post.
Addressing concerns surrounding copyright infringement, Owens emphasized their unwavering commitment to advocating for legitimate methods of preserving these games on the blockchain, reassuring the audience about the project’s ethical standards.
