Kabosu, the Shiba Inu who held a significant place in the hearts of the crypto community as the face of the iconic ‘Doge’ meme and the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, peacefully passed away on May 24 at the age of 17.
Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, shared the news on her blog, thanking everyone for their love and support. A farewell party for Kabosu, affectionately known as “Kabo-chan,” will be held on May 26, 2024, at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, in Japan.
“We are hoping to hold a fun farewell party at Sakura Furusato Hiroba when the weather gets cooler . This was just a quick update. Thank you all so much now! We are truly grateful,” Sato’s post read.
The crypto community and fans of Kabosu have expressed their condolences, sharing tributes and favourite memories of the internet-famous dog. Kabosu’s legacy as the face of Dogecoin, currently valued at $0.16, will continue to symbolise community spirit and inspire future generations of meme culture.
Kabosu first gained fame in 2010 when Sato posted photos of her adopted dog online. One particular image of Kabosu, featuring a sceptical and curious expression, quickly went viral, giving rise to the “Doge” meme. This meme, characterised by phrases in broken English and Comic Sans font, became a fundamental part of internet culture.
The meme’s popularity soared in 2013 when Dogecoin was created, and Kabosu’s image became its official logo. Despite starting as a joke, Dogecoin evolved into a popular cryptocurrency known for its charitable initiatives, such as supporting clean water projects and funding for the Jamaican bobsled team.
In December 2022, Sato informed the community about Kabosu’s declining health, prompting an outpouring of support from the crypto community. This included Dogecoin co-creator Billy Markus, also known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, asking his followers to send support and one generous individual offering to cover any expenses needed for Kabosu’s treatment.
