Former British Finance Minister George Osborne has taken on the role of a global advisor at Coinbase, according to a new report from CNBC.
Osborne, who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016, brings a wealth of experience in economic policy to the cryptocurrency exchange.
Coinbase Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzard, in a post on X, publicly welcomed Osborne to the company’s global advisory board. Shirzard expressed enthusiasm about Osborne joining, highlighting the former U.K. executive’s expertise in journalism, business, and government. He also conveyed the company’s anticipation of future growth on a global scale.
Osborne’s role at Coinbase will involve serving on the advisory committee, where he will play a crucial part in connecting Coinbase with influential regulators and politicians.
Coinbase’s advisory council, initiated in May last year, already boasts a roster of high-profile former government executives on its advisory board. Among the notable figures on the board include former U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper, former U.S. Senator Patrick Toomey, former congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, and BGR Group managing director David Urban.
Interestingly, Osborne’s association with Coinbase dates back to 2023. The company’s CEO, Brian Armstrong, participated in an event moderated by Osborne in London.
This development unfolds at a critical juncture for Coinbase, as the leading crypto exchange faces heightened scrutiny in the United States. Alongside other major crypto exchanges such as Binance, Kraken, Genesis Global Capital, and Gemini Trust, Coinbase is under investigation by U.S. authorities.
In June 2023, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Coinbase, alleging the listing and selling of unregistered securities in various cryptocurrencies. Despite these challenges, Armstrong has affirmed the exchange’s commitment to remain in the United States. In a recent interview with CNBC, the CEO stated that they have no plans to relocate.
