Ethereum’s core developers have successfully implemented the Dencun upgrade on the Holesky testnet, marking the final stage before its anticipated deployment on the Ethereum mainnet next month.
The Dencun upgrade was successfully forked on the Holesky testnet at 6:35 a.m. ET, with confirmation from Nethermind, a crucial Ethereum execution client supporting the infrastructure for running Ethereum nodes.
Dencun combines two distinct upgrades, Cancun and Deneb. Cancun focuses on enhancing the performance and efficiency of the Ethereum execution layer responsible for processing transactions and smart contracts. In contrast, Deneb concentrates on refining the consensus layer, ensuring the security and integrity of the Ethereum network.
A key aspect of the Dencun upgrade is the introduction of proto-danksharding (EIP-4844). It features blobs that store and access large data volumes outside the Ethereum blockchain. This innovation aims to alleviate transaction costs, particularly benefiting decentralized applications (dApps) on Layer 2 rollup chains. The overarching goal is to enhance accessibility and affordability for developers constructing and utilizing dApps on the Ethereum network.
Compared to Shapella, Ethereum’s last major upgrade in March 2023, Dencun is considered an “optimization upgrade.” While not as groundbreaking as previous updates, it significantly improves efficiency and performance, laying the groundwork for future enhancements and aligning with Ethereum’s scalability and fee reduction objectives.
The Dencun upgrade was smoothly deployed on the Goerli and Sepolia testnets last month. The Holesky testnet deployment was, however, the most anticipated because of its more extensive user and validor base.
The decision on the mainnet deployment date rests with the Ethereum All Core Developers, with expectations set for early to mid-March. The forthcoming Ethereum developers meeting, scheduled for February 8 at 14:00 UTC, provides an opportunity for developers to discuss recent developments and make informed decisions regarding Ethereum’s future trajectory.
