In anticipation of the upcoming 2024 elections in the United States, Artificial Intelligence giant OpenAI has pledged to prevent AI misuse while offering transparency and improving voter access to correct voting information.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI noted that it will be more dedicated to election work, combining the expertise of its threat intelligence, policy, legal, engineering, and safety systems teams to identify, locate, and mitigate potential abuse of its system during the upcoming elections.
Per the post, the company’s “cross-functional” teams will prioritise specific “initiatives” to prepare for the coming elections. One of its plans, which it terms “misleading deep fakes,” includes preventing abuse and cracking down on chatbots impersonating scaled influence operations or election candidates.
OpenAI emphasized that using its AI tools to develop applications for political campaigning is presently not permitted. It outlined plans to implement guardrails on DALL·E to turn down requests for image generation of real individuals, especially political candidates.
The influence of artificial intelligence on elections has been a key topic of debate for a while now. In December 2023, two European researchers found that Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot gave misleading information about the elections. Last August, the United States Federal Election Commission considered a public petition to regulate the use of generative AI to create political campaign ads before the 2024 presidential elections.
It is worth noting that United States Democrat Shamaine Daniels has already implemented an AI bot named “Ashley” as part of a campaign to reach more possible voters. Daniels, who is running against Republican Representative Scott Perry, is hopeful that this new tool will help her win this time, particularly after her narrow defeat in the 2020 election.
The ChatGPT creator also emphasized the importance of collaboration from all parts of the democratic process. The company noted that it has partnered with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and would be working closely with the institution to provide its users with the correct and appropriate voter information.
