The Filecoin Foundation has successfully completed its demonstration of an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) application for space communications, according to a blog post published on its website on January 16, 2024.
The demonstration, which included transferring files from Earth to outer space and back, was part of the company’s efforts to illustrate the use of decentralized and distributed technologies in space communications. During the demonstration, the IPFS whitepaper and an image of the Filecoin Foundation’s mascot were transmitted to an orbiting LM LINUSS ™CubeSat and successfully returned using a purpose-built IPFS.
In an interview with Cointelegraph at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Filecoin Foundation’s President, Martha Belcher, highlighted the significance of the demonstration, which comes after nearly three years of collaboration with aerospace firm Lockheed Martin.
According to Belcher, the successful project outcomes underscored the viability of decentralized systems in outer space, positioning IFPS as a technology capable of providing effective long-distance networking in space.
The Filecoin boss argued that decentralized systems prove to be more effective in space communications compared to centralized systems. While centralized systems may not encounter problems on Earth, they are prone to file corruption and experience delays in space. For instance, communications exhibit multisecond delays on the moon and multi-minute delays on Mars, highlighting the advantages of decentralized systems in these scenarios.
She noted that since the project’s inception, it has been preprogrammed as a technology that could provide long-distance networking, especially in space, and that is why it has the name “InterPlanetary File System.”
Filecoin also took to X to explain the differences between HTTPs, the existing and most common file-sharing system, and IPFS. The team noted that while HTTP retrieves data from a single server, IPFS retrieves data from the nearest peer, showcasing the decentralized nature of IPFS in contrast to traditional HTTP protocols.
