Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is making a strategic move to assert its dominance in the AI sector by introducing AI-powered chatbots with human-like personalities, according to a report by the Financial Times on August 1, 2023.
The Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the matter, claimed that Meta is developing prototypes for chatbots capable of engaging in human-level conversations with their users.
The chatbots are reportedly designed to take on various characters, introduce a new search experience, and be a fun product for users to interact with. Among the planned chatbots are one that emulates the speaking style of Abraham Lincoln and another that offers travel advice in a laid-back surfer-like manner.
The chatbots are expected to be launched in September 2023.
According to the Financial Times, the move to integrate chatbots with human-like personalities is a part of Meta’s strategic approach to improve user retention and drive higher engagement on its social media platforms. The company aims to enhance the overall user experience and keep users more actively involved in their social media communities by offering chatbots that can provide search results, recommendations, and interactive fun.
Also, these user-friendly chatbots present a significant opportunity for Meta to gather extensive user data. With users engaging in conversations with these chatbots, the company can obtain valuable insights into their preferences, interests, and behaviors. This data can be used to fine-tune content delivery, personalize advertisements, and create a more immersive online experience tailored to each user’s preferences.
In addition to developing chatbots, Meta has been actively investing in generative AI technology. In July 2023, the company announced its plans to launch a commercial edition of its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model, LLaMa 2, in a move aimed at extending the application of its AI tech across various industries. Before this, in February 2023, Meta had already introduced the extensive language model (LLM) in the academic and research sectors with varying degrees of success.
Notably, Alibaba, the prominent e-commerce group in China, took the lead as the first Chinese company to leverage Meta’s AI model, Llama 2, for cost-free program development.
