Meta is reportedly planning to release a commercial version of its artificial intelligence (AI) model in a move aimed at expanding its use across different industries.
The tech giant had previously released its large language model (LLM), LLaMa, in February 2023. This first version of the AI model was targeted at researchers and academics. However, the upcoming version is expected to offer broader accessibility and customization options for businesses and enable them to leverage the AI technology to develop unique software and applications.
Meta’s decision to release a commercial version of its AI model is seen as a strategic move to position itself as a strong competitor against the market leaders, Google and OpenAI. The company hopes to reduce OpenAI’s current influence in the market by making its AI model more accessible to businesses.
While all of Meta’s models are available for free and open-source, the company has reportedly been exploring the possibility of introducing a premium version specifically for enterprise clients. However, this premium version will not be included in the upcoming release.
Meanwhile, Meta and OpenAI are currently involved in a legal dispute over their AI technologies. Popular authors Richard Kadrey, Christopher Golden, and Sarah Silverman have filed a lawsuit against both companies over allegations of copyright violations and privacy infringement.
The authors claimed that Meta and OpenAI utilized content from various sources, including their own literary works, in the training datasets of their AI technologies, LLaMa and ChatGPT. Their dissatisfaction stems from the way their work was incorporated into the AI models without proper authorization or acknowledgment.
The lawsuit is still ongoing, and it is unclear how it will be resolved as both companies are yet to give an official statement on the issue.
