IBM, in partnership with The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), has announced plans to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) technology to boost fan engagement during the upcoming Wimbledon tennis tournament in July 2023.
Both organizations plan to release an AI-powered commentary and player analysis feature powered by IBM’s Watsonx technology. The feature will present match highlights videos, generate audio commentary and captions, and offer valuable insights into a game’s crucial moments. Fans would be able to access these videos through the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com.
The AI-powered features are part of a suite of digital tools already available on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com. This suite includes the IBM Power Index Leaderboard, IBM Match Insights, and Personalized Highlights Reels and Recommendations. These tools contribute to what both organizations refer to as “using technology to help fans engage with The Championships on a deeper level.”
According to Usama Al-Qassab, Marketing and Commercial Director of The All England Club, the ultimate goal is to offer Wimbledon fans worldwide an insightful and engaging digital experience of The Championships.
Al-Qassab stated:
“We are constantly innovating with our partners at IBM to provide Wimbledon fans, wherever they are in the world, with an insightful and engaging digital experience of The Championships.“
Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at IBM, emphasized that partnership is revolutionizing the 2023 Championships by incorporating cutting-edge tools to enhance levels of understanding and interaction.
Adashek highlighted that IBM had witnessed these technologies’ transformative capabilities in augmenting the audience base for prestigious sporting events such as Wimbledon and delivering exceptional digital experiences.
Meanwhile, in the United States, lawmakers have taken proactive steps to address the widespread adoption of AI. The National AI Commission Act, introduced by Representatives Ted Lieu, Ken Buck, and Anna Eshoo, aims to establish a commission responsible for assessing the country’s approach to AI and formulating comprehensive regulations for the AI sector. The expectation for the commission is to foster collaboration and generate responsible AI recommendations for effective regulation by bringing together a diverse group of experts, government officials, industry representatives, and labor stakeholders.
As AI continues to shape various industries, the integration of AI technology in prestigious sporting events like Wimbledon demonstrates the growing significance of AI in delivering enhanced experiences to audiences.
