Apple has issued a warning to Damus, a decentralized social media app, regarding its compliance with Apple’s standards. The tech giant has threatened to remove the app from the App Store if it fails to meet the required guidelines.
According to a tweet from Damus on June 13, 2023, Apple advised the app developers to provide an update compliant with the App Store Review Guidelines within a 14-day timeframe, and the failure to do so would result in the app being removed from the store.

The focus of Apple’s warning alert is Damus’s “zaps” feature. “zaps” are akin to tips given to users; they allow users to earn bitcoin through their posts. The underlying Nostr protocol, which serves as the foundation for Damus, claims that these tips are transmitted over the Lightning network at the speed of light with minimal transaction fees. Damus also recently incorporated a Layer 2 Lightning Network into its platform, which enables users to tip and make Bitcoin payments directly on the website.
While tips or donations may be optional, Apple has pointed out that if they are linked to or associated with receiving digital content, in-app purchases must be utilized in accordance with its guidelines. Apple noted that Damus allows users to send “tips” connected to receiving content from digital content creators using a mechanism other than its specified in-app purchase method, implying that the current implementation of the tipping feature in Damus does not comply with Apple’s guidelines.
In its defense, Damus stated that it does not sell digital items or provide services related to such sales. Instead, it simply incorporates a tip button to facilitate peer-to-peer transactions similar to Venmo or CashApp.
Damus was introduced publicly in February 2023 as “the social network you control” with the support of former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Its announcement generated significant interest, as Damus gained 45,000 members on its first day and quickly rose to the tenth spot on the top-charting apps on the store. The app was built on Nostr technology, and it aims to establish a decentralized social media network that gives users more control over their data and content.
