Apple has implemented restrictions on the use of AI chatbot ChatGPT and similar tools within the company due to concerns about data security.
An internal document obtained by Wall Street Journal revealed that the company banned the use of ChatGPT and other AI tools supported by Microsoft. The restriction also extends to Microsoft’s Copilot, an AI tool on GitHub that automates code writing.
Apple’s internal document highlighted the need to address potential security risks associated with employee use of these AI tools. It stated the decision aligns with Apple’s focus on developing its own AI technology and aims to prevent employees from using programs that may pose risks of revealing confidential information.
This internal ban comes just after OpenAi announced the launch of the ChatGPT app on the Apple app store for iOS users in the US and plans to expand to other countries and an Android version in the works.
Apple is not alone in implementing such restrictions, as Samsung also recently prohibited its employees from using generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, in their workflow and office routines. The ban specifically applied to the use of generative AI systems on Samsung’s internal networks and devices. This decision was prompted by concerns arising from engineers uploading sensitive company information to the ChatGPT platform, which raised security risks.
In another development, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the US Congress Judiciary Committee’s sub-committee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law on May 16. He emphasized the importance of regulations that address advanced AI systems, ensuring safety standards, testing, and disclosure of AI development results. Altman advocated for mandatory licensing of companies involved in developing powerful AI technologies, including ChatGPT.
These recent developments reflect the growing concerns and efforts to establish effective oversight and regulations for AI technologies, particularly in relation to data security, confidentiality, and responsible development practices.
