Japan has expressed support for OpenAI amidst a sea of restrictions by several nations and uncertainties for the artificial intelligence (AI) startup.
On April 10, 2023, Hirokazu Matsuno, chief cabinet secretary, stated that Japan would consider integrating AI technology, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, into governmental systems if security and privacy concerns are addressed. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman received these remarks from Matsuno before meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his visit to Japan.
After meeting with Kishida, Altman announced that OpenAI was considering expanding its Japanese language services and establishing a presence in Japan. Altman mentioned that during his meeting with Kishida, they discussed the advantages and drawbacks of the technology, as well as concerns surrounding it, and how to use AI as effectively as possible for people.
