Renowned Japanese automaker, Nissan, has joined other automobile manufacturers in embracing Web3 technology. The company recently applied for four new NFT and Metaverse trademarks in the United States. Additionally, its Japan unit is experimenting with metaverse auto sales.
The trademark application was filed on March 7, 2023, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It covered filings from Nissan’s brands, including Infiniti, Nismo, and Nissan.

The trademark applications revealed Nissan’s plans to offer a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and media such as tickets, images, artwork, videos, and music authenticated by NFTs. Nissan also plans to create downloadable computer software for electronic business transactions and authenticating NFTs using blockchain-based software technology.
On March 8, 2023, Nissan Japan announced the start of a demonstration experiment of its virtual store, “Nissan Hype Lab.” This platform was created to provide customers with a fresh experience that combines the physical and digital worlds. The Hype Lab will be open 24 hours a day, and anyone can visit the website from a PC or smartphone. Visitors can freely wander around the Lab, customizing their avatars and testing and purchasing Nissan vehicles.

Virtual employees will assist visitors and demonstrate Nissan vehicles, and a car-life advisor will provide an estimate based on a consultation regarding the vehicle. A purchase contract can be made when a customer considers buying a car and makes a reservation through the virtual staff.
In November 2022, Nissan filed five Web3 trademark applications for some of its iconic car models, such as Z, GTR, and Skyline. This move puts Nissan on the list of other notable car manufacturers, including Ford Motor Company and General Motors, actively using blockchain to improve the automotive experience and NFT-related filings.
