Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of FTX, might’ve had his Twitter account hijacked. The account tweeted the word “What” at 4:01 am GMT +1, which was followed by a second tweet with the letter “H” at 4:49 am GMT +1.
Several Twitter users began creating poor jokes and memes in response to the puzzling tweet.
Former US federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti sarcastically remarked, “This is the smartest Twitter thread Bankman-Fried made in a week.”
FTX had an estimated 1.2 million registered customers who traded Bitcoin and thousands of other cryptocurrency tokens on the exchange.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the chief executive of Binance, tweeted to his 7.5 million followers on November 8 that his company was liquidating its FTX token (FTT) holdings as a result of “recent revelations.”
CZ later backed out of a proposed acquisition of FTX, which ultimately led to the inevitable crash of FTX as panicking customers and investors started withdrawing billions of dollars from the cryptocurrency exchange.
Last week, Bankman-Fried posted a lengthy apology on Twitter, despite numerous legal professionals warning him that doing so might put him in even greater legal danger. Many begged the shamed cryptocurrency tycoon to stop tweeting in order to avoid aggravating his situation.
According to a recent Reuters report, the former CEO of FTX is currently being investigated for criminal misconduct in the Bahamas.
A few media outlets earlier this week also asserted that Bankman-Fried was under investigation by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The FTX Group, which consists of over 130 businesses, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after Bankman-Fried was unable to secure the much-desired bailout.
This follows the discovery that Bankman-Fried was using client funds to fund the trading firm Alameda Research. But it’s still not clear if his actions amounted to fraud.
