Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey have launched an academy to offer free in-person and online Bitcoin lessons.
Residents of Marcy Houses, the Brooklyn neighbourhood where Jay-Z grew up, will qualify to enroll in the lessons.
These classes are intended to “empower the community with knowledge” and remove the barriers to obtaining a financial education.
According to information gathered from the official website,
“The vision for Bitcoin is that it doesn’t have barriers, but lack of access to financial education is a barrier. It’s still hard to use for everyday necessities. Plus, people need devices and data plans.”
As a result, students will gain more than just from a course taught by Najah J. Roberts and Lamar Wilson, who have built a name for themselves in the crypto industry.
They will also get MiFi devices to make sure they can connect to the internet, a one-year data plan, and, if needed, a smartphone. Classes will be held from June 22 to September 7, with in-person sessions two evenings a week, with dinner provided.
During the summer, children between 5 and 17 years old can learn about programming.
Jay-Z and Dorsey are funding the program and the equipment that will be delivered to people with “on-the-ground support” from the Shawn Carter Foundation and Block. Shawn Carter is, of course, the actual name of the world-famous rapper.
Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey verified the news on their Twitter profiles, with the artist adding:
“Bitcoin Academy, starting in Marcy, a place that taught me so much, is hopefully the first of many. The simple goal is to provide people tools to build independence for themselves and then the community around them.”
Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey have previously worked together. The singer reportedly sold TIDAL to Square for $302 million in May 2021. Dorsey, formerly the CEO of Twitter, now focuses more on Bitcoin adoption.
