Although the crypto market is weak right now, a new bitcoin miner has commenced operations at a 6 MW solar-powered facility in western Colorado.
The mining operation of Aspen Creek Digital Corporation (ACDC), which was established in January, is situated next to a 10 MW solar farm. The startup intends to start mining bitcoin at its data centre and eventually provide computing services to other companies.
The S19 bitcoin mining rigs will be housed in the Colorado data center, which will also house a 75,000-square-foot R&D and fulfillment center. The building will be a central place for testing, maintenance, storage, and training for ACDC’s future IT infrastructure.
As a result of the decrease in cryptocurrency values, hashrates nearing all-time highs, a tightening capital market, rising power costs, and supply chain concerns, new miners are joining the industry at a time when the existing miners are having trouble remaining viable.
ACDC CEO Alexandra DaCosta stated that the company had acquired enough money in advance to purchase the required transformers and switchgear for 240 MW of capacity.
In addition to the Colorado data centre, ACDC is also establishing bitcoin mining facilities in Texas. Its second project, a 30 MW data centre with 10,000 ASIC miners co-located behind the metre with an 87 MW solar farm, is expected to be operational this summer. The third project comprises a 150 MW data centre positioned behind the metre beside a 200 MW solar farm.
While the mining operations will be entirely powered by solar energy, they will still be wired into the grid so that they have the option of sending power back to it.
The decision to employ solar energy as a power source comes as more miners explore using renewable energy sources for their operations and as legislators around the world become more concerned about miners’ energy consumption. Recently, Blockstream and Block (SQ), owned by Adam Back and Jack Dorsey, announced that they are building a test crypto mine in Texas that will be powered by batteries and a Tesla solar installation.
