MetaMask is ending support for the services of Wyre, a popular crypto payment platform. This decision comes amid reports that Wyre may be planning to shut down operations in the near future.
To reflect this change, MetaMask took to Twitter on January 5th to announce that it has removed Wyre from its platform. This payment system, which was integrated into MetaMask’s digital wallet, allows users to easily and seamlessly purchase various cryptocurrencies directly through the wallet.
Wyre is a San Francisco-based cryptocurrency payment company. It was founded in 2013 and nearly sold for a hefty price of $1.5 billion in the previous year. However, the deal ultimately fell through in September 2022, when e-commerce startup. Bolt abandoned its plans to acquire Wyre during the tumultuous crypto bear market. The agreement between the two companies was made in April 2022.
However, despite ending support for Wyre, MetaMask has assured its users that they will still have access to a wide range of other payment gateway options. Their announcement specifically mentioned their support for Transak, MoonPay, and Sardine. These services can be accessed through various methods, including Apple Pay, traditional bank cards, and bank transfers.
The recent announcement from MetaMask regarding their decision to end support for Wyre’s services comes on the heels of reports that Wyre CEO Ioannis Giannaros has informed employees that the company may be preparing to shut down operations in the near future. This news has certainly been a cause for concern among those in the cryptocurrency community who have come to rely on Wyre’s payment platform.
“We’ll do everything we can, but I want everyone to prepare that we will need to wind down the business over the next couple of weeks,” Giannaros reportedly said.
