Reddit has begun the process of testing NFT profile pictures in its platform, a few days after Twitter released the feature on iOS devices.
This is not the first time that Reddit is exploring NFTs and their potential use cases on the platform. The popular social media platform set up a dedicated channel for NFTs on nft.reddit.com. At the moment, the page is aimed at discussing Reddit’s custom collectibles called CryptoSnoos.
Releasing the custom collectibles received mixed feelings from users. Some felt that Reddit should not get involved in NFTs. A set of users felt that the NFT world was exclusionary because of the high prices of NFTs.
If the NFT profile picture feature is implemented users will seamlessly use NFTs as their profile pictures.
Techcrunch interviewed Tim Rathschmidt, Reddit spokesperson, and he noted that:
“We are always exploring ways to bring value to users and communities on Reddit. At the moment, we are testing the possibility of using NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verifying ownership.”
He went on to state,
“This is a small internal test and no decision has been made on expanding or rolling out capacity.”
Nima Owji, an app developer, announced on Twitter that a Reddit banner was being used to promote the feature. In his tweet, he stated,
“#Reddit is working on #NFT profile pics as well!”
Twitter is the first mainstream social media platform to have incorporated the NFT profile pictures, and this was done only a few days ago. At the moment, this element is available to only Twitter Blue followers on iOS. Releasing this feature did not sit well for some people, as a day after the launch, a GitHub contributor released a browser extension that allows users to automatically block Twitter accounts that utilize NFT profile pictures.
