Following its unexpected shutdown, the team of Web3 social media platform Twetch has hinted at a possible future for the platform, suggesting they might open-source the platform’s code so that others could create their versions.
“This may seem like the end of an era, but it doesn’t have to be. We are still working on some things to make sure twonks are as interoperable as they need to be. We are also seriously considering open sourcing, so anyone can spin up whatever version of Twetch they want”,
they pointed out.
The platform abruptly ceased operations without prior warning and explanation to its users. On June 6, the platform’s team announced the development in a post on X :
“GM. Today is the day. We are officially winding down Twetch.💔 It’s been a fun few years, and we can’t say thank you enough to all our customers who believed in us. Your BSV & assets are on-chain. You can import your seed into Yours Wallet (@yoursxbt).”
Twetch’s website is still active, and there is no explanation for the unexpected closure. However, the platform’s mobile application remains available for download from both the Apple and Google app stores.
The platform, positioned as a rival to X, was created to be a decentralized social media platform where users could directly monetize their content and interactions using the blockchain. It was built on the Bitcoin SV (BSV) blockchain and enabled users to earn cryptocurrency for their posts, comments, and likes.
The unexpected and sudden shutdown has left many of the platform users unable to redeem or cash out their non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and digital collections. In response to a user inquiry, the team stated,
“We are working on it.”
