According to the Irish Independent, Trinity College Dublin is partnering with Ripple to launch a blockchain research initiative at the Adapt Research Ireland Centre.
This initiative aims to enhance blockchain technology, tackle cryptocurrency cybersecurity challenges, and create innovative fintech solutions.
The partnership provides $200,000 in funding over two years for Trinity College. As part of the agreement, the university will host an XRPL validator—a node that verifies transactions on Ripple’s blockchain network. This setup will allow researchers at Trinity to contribute to the platform’s decentralized infrastructure.
Hitesh Tewari, a professor at Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics, will lead the project. He commented that the initiative will allow students and staff to research and develop solutions for real-world challenges. One of the projects being developed under the UBRI program is a decentralized social media platform which aims to eliminate central authority and provide users with more privacy and control over their data. However, further details about the project have not yet been disclosed.
Trinity College will be crucial in encouraging blockchain adoption within the local community by providing educational programs and workshops.
Lauren Weymouth, Ripple’s Senior Director of University Partnerships, emphasized the collaboration with Trinity College, noting Ireland’s role as a leader in blockchain and cryptocurrency. Stating, “Ireland has established itself as a leading hub for blockchain and cryptocurrency advancements, and Ripple’s UBRI program is excited to collaborate with Trinity College to drive more innovation in this thriving ecosystem,”
Meanwhile, in July 2024, The University of Wyoming launched an institute for Bitcoin research led by Associate Professor Bradley Rettler, who criticized the quality of existing Bitcoin studies. He highlighted a 2018 paper by Professor Camilo Mora that inaccurately projected Bitcoin’s emissions impacting global warming by 2048, overlooking important factors. Rettler called for more peer-reviewed research to improve public understanding and inform policy.
