Byte Federal, a Bitcoin ATM operator based in the United States, has confirmed a security breach that compromised the personal data of more than 58,000 customers.
A filing with the Maine Attorney General’s office revealed that an incident took place on September 30. An unknown attacker exploited a vulnerability in GitLab, a third-party project management software. This breach allowed the attacker to access one of Byte Federal’s servers, exposing sensitive customer information. The compromised data included names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, government-issued IDs, transaction records, and photographs.
While no funds or assets were reported stolen, Byte Federal has urged all customers to reset their login credentials. The company has also implemented a hard reset on all accounts to prevent further compromise.
In a post-incident update, Byte Federal stated they are collaborating with an independent cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach and have found no evidence of misusing the leaked data.
The Florida-based company, which operates 1,387 Bitcoin ATMs across the U.S. and ranks as the eighth-largest operator in the country, is also entangled in a trademark infringement lawsuit with Bitcoin Depot, the nation’s leading crypto ATM provider. Byte Federal alleges that Bitcoin Depot’s branding infringes on its trademark rights.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin Depot has announced a strategic retail collaboration with Fareway Stores, a growing grocery chain with over 130 locations in the Midwest. In a press release dated April 17, Bitcoin Depot revealed plans to install Bitcoin ATMs in more than 66 Fareway locations across states such as Minnesota, Illinois, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. These installations are scheduled for the second quarter of the year.
Brandon Mintz, CEO and co-founder of Bitcoin Depot, described the partnership as a significant step in the company’s 2024 expansion strategy. He emphasized the importance of making cryptocurrency access simple and convenient for new and existing users.
