Exaion, a subsidiary of EDF Group renowned for its sustainable digital services, has joined the Cronos blockchain ecosystem as a validator on its EVM network. This partnership, announced on June 20, 2024, marks a significant step for both entities in advancing blockchain technology with a focus on sustainability.
As a validator on the Cronos EVM network, Exaion will join 32 others to play a crucial role in securing and maintaining the network’s integrity.
Cronos, known for its interoperability with Ethereum and Cosmos, operates multiple chains, including Cronos EVM and Cronos POS, supporting various blockchain applications such as payments, NFTs, and Layer 2 scaling solutions.
This move is expected to enhance Cronos’ capabilities in DeFi and other blockchain applications and reinforces Cronos’ position among the top blockchain ecosystems globally. The platform claims that it already facilitates secure transactions and manages assets exceeding $6 billion.
Ken Timsit, Managing Director of Cronos Labs, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, highlighting Exaion’s expertise in sustainable digital solutions and EDF’s leadership in renewable energy as valuable additions to the Cronos ecosystem.
Fatih Balyeli, Exaion’s CEO, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting its alignment with Exaion’s mission to support sustainable digital transformation globally.
Meanwhile, Exaion’s involvement with Cronos follows its earlier partnership with the Chiliz blockchain network, where it joined as a validator node to enhance fan engagement in the sports and entertainment sectors.
Exaion was originally launched to offer Web3 (i.e. blockchain) services from distributed data centres powered by renewable energy. In 2022, they launched a Node-as-a-Service platform in partnership with the EDF group and announced plans to deploy 20 data centres across Canada. They also collaborated with quantum computing leaders to incorporate advanced technologies in eco-friendly data centres.
However, it appears that the company might have evolved its focus. The company now says it focused on upgrading old supercomputers, utilizing largely decarbonized electricity, and recovering waste heat while still offering blockchain-related and data centre services.
