The Ethereum blockchain, famous for its staggering daily transaction volume dollars, also holds a treasure trove of undeletable on-chain messages, revealing a mix of heartfelt pleas and life stories from individuals pleading with hackers to return stolen funds to hopeless romantics begging their ex-lovers for another chance.
“It’s a fascinatingly dark and beautiful realm simultaneously. With crimes, exploits, and love letters, it encompasses everything,”
remarked Croissant ETH, a pseudonymous industry analyst who claimed to have “scoured through over 1.5 million messages on the Ethereum blockchain” in a May 27th X post.
One message involved someone attempting to contact their estranged lover, who had blocked them on several social media platforms.
“I feel somewhat pathetic reaching out to you like this, but I’m unsure what else to do,”
they expressed before adding:
“Every moment since you blocked me has felt like an eternity as I wait for you to hopefully unblock me and send me a message […] “Will you please give me a second chance?”
In another poignant message, a widow mistakenly transferred $500,000 of wrapped-Ether (wETH) to a scammer and begged for its return, believing in the scammer’s inherent goodness. Another victim, unable to face his wife after the loss, begged the scammer to end his “misery” by returning the funds, saying his life was otherwise ruined.
Amidst these tales of woe, there were also heartwarming moments. A cryptocurrency whale sent 0.5 Ether to help a sick child, prompting tears of gratitude from the recipient.
Another message paid tribute to “John Doe,” remembered as an avid traveller and mathematics professor.
Some messages ended on a lighter note. One person educated his girlfriend on writing on-chain messages, hoping she would join the crypto community.
The Ethereum blockchain, beyond its financial significance, serves as a unique repository of human experiences and emotions, offering a glimpse into the complexities of life through its immutable messages.
