OpenAI and Microsoft have announced that they are working together to protect users from state-sponsored cyberattacks. The two companies noted that they joined forces to create a more secure and resilient AI ecosystem in light of recent cyberattacks.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s primary product offering, there has been a surge in the use of AI-generated deepfakes and scams. While OpenAI has taken steps to prevent ChatGPT from generating harmful or inappropriate content, hackers have found ways to manipulate the chatbot and bypass the safeguards.
According to a new report published by Microsoft, various state-sponsored hacking groups, including Charcoal Typhoon (China), Salmon Typhoon (China), Crimson Sandstorm (Iran), Emerald Sleet (North Korea), and Forest Blizzard (Russia), have been exploring the integration of AI large language models (LLMs) into their hacking tactics. The report noted that both companies were able to disrupt the use of their platform for five recent cyberattacks attributed to these groups.
The groups are said to be experimenting with AI-powered tools to create convincing phishing emails and other forms of cyberattacks. While the threat is still in its early stages, experts caution that it could pose serious implications for cybersecurity if they are not stopped.
Meanwhile, policymakers worldwide and in the U.S. have stepped up scrutiny of generative AI developers like OpenAI. In response to President Biden’s executive order on AI safety, more than 200 organizations, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Google, have come together to establish the AI Safety Institute and the United States AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC).
These groups will work to promote the safe development of AI, combat AI-generated deepfakes, and address cybersecurity issues. The executive order was issued in late October 2023, and the new initiatives are seen as an important step towards ensuring that AI is developed and used responsibly.
