The cryptoverse has taken a trip down memory lane, with the classic Nintendo 64 console now being emulated on Bitcoin’s Ordinals protocol. The retro gaming system, which was a hit in the 90s, is now being brought back to life on the blockchain.
In a recent development, Bitcoin Ordinals portfolio tracker Ninjalerts announced that its team of developers had successfully inscribed a Nintendo 64 emulator on Bitcoin, using the protocol’s Ordinals feature.
According to the company’s CEO, Trevor Owens, this achievement is part of the company’s ongoing “Pizza Ninjas” project, which aims to preserve and protect “critically endangered games.”
Owens highlighted that the permissionless nature of blockchain technology means that anyone can store data on the network. However, he also noted that it may be difficult for intellectual property holders to remove data that’s already been uploaded. This could also have implications for how IP rights are managed and enforced in the world of blockchain technology.
Owens cited a study that found that nearly 90% of classic games from before 2010 are endangered. He talked about the importance of preserving gaming history and compared games to films and music, suggesting that they are a vital part of our culture and should be preserved for future generations.
On January 8, the team at Ninjalerts added an SNES emulator to the Bitcoin blockchain. Just like the previous project, the N64 emulator is stored on Bitcoin Ordinal Inscription 61,648,429, and users with compatible game files can play N64 games directly in their web browsers. The N64 emulator was made possible thanks to the integration of Brotli. This allowed a significant reduction in file size, requiring less data to be stored on the blockchain.
While some may be concerned about the legality of putting games on the blockchain due to copyright issues, Owens assured the community that the project is being done in an ethical manner. The team at Ninjalerts is only inscribing games that are in the public domain, and are not violating any copyrights.
