Amidst the ongoing debates and the waning excitement for the Worldcoin project, Sam Altman, the project’s co-founder, released a video showing individuals in Japan queuing up to exchange their iris scans for “free” Worldcoin (WLD) tokens.
The video depicted a lineup of people eagerly awaiting their turn to receive 25 Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, equivalent to $50 in value, in exchange for providing an iris scan of their identity.
Sam Altman shared the footage on Twitter, proudly stating that “One person is now getting confirmed every eight seconds.”

Earlier in the week, on July 24, the Worldcoin project team announced the launch of its WRLD tokens and encouraged users to sign up for a World ID to become eligible for the tokens. A World ID is an exclusive account designed to help individuals establish their online identity through in-person verification using Orbs.
The Orb is a biometric verification device that grants users a unique World ID upon successfully collecting their biometric data, specifically their iris scans.
While Japanese investors appeared more enthusiastic about the project, the sentiment among Hong Kong investors was less optimistic. Local reports indicated that the three Orbs in Hong Kong collectively registered only 200 sign-ups on the first day and a total of 600 sign-ups overall.
Also, notable entrepreneurs like Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, and Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, hold reservations about the proposed system. They fear that deviating from the core principles of privacy, accessibility, and decentralization on which the crypto ecosystem was built could lead to disastrous consequences.
Meanwhile, privacy and security concerns have emerged due to the sensitive biometric data collected by the Orb. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is reportedly set to investigate Worldcoin’s operations in the UK and assess its compliance with data protection regulations.
The Worldcoin project’s exchange program has drawn considerable attention, sparking both enthusiasm and controversy. As discussions continue, concerns regarding privacy, security, and adherence to the principles of the cryptocurrency ecosystem remain at the forefront of public debate.
