According to data estimates from Similarweb, ChatGPT experienced a decline in global traffic during May and June 2023. The web traffic analytics website reported a 9.7% decrease in both desktop and mobile web traffic for ChatGPT in June. In the same period, the number of unique visitors also dropped by 5.7%, while the average time spent on the site decreased by 8.5%.
Notably, traffic from the United States saw a significant decline of 10.3% compared to the previous month. Despite the decrease, ChatGPT continues to outperform competitors such as Google Bard, Microsoft Bing, and the AI-powered chatbot Character AI.
Similarweb suggested that the decline in traffic may be due to the “novelty of the generative AI tool wearing off”. Upwork’s VP for Client Strategy supported this interpretation, adding that the decline could also be influenced by students taking summer breaks and major companies banning the use of generative AI tools in the workplace.
However, Andrew Ruiz, social media influencer, pointed out that the explanations given for the decline do not consider the traffic generated by ChatGPT’s recently launched iOS application. Ruiz believes that there may be a shift in the way users are accessing ChatGPT.
The chart doesn’t measure traffic via the iOS app (which came out the month ChatGPT traffic to the URL began to drop).
So it’s not clear to me the drop is due to a lack of usage or a change in how ChatGPT is accessed.
Could be lack of interest. But can’t confirm with this data. https://t.co/J7r038GhMT pic.twitter.com/iT7Eqg4qvj

OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, released the iOS version of the AI tool’s mobile application on May 18, 2023. The app was available initially in the United States but the company stated its plans to expand its availability to other countries in the weeks that followed.
Recently, OpenAI temporarily blocked ChatGPT’s Browse feature, a Bing-based search engine tool, after a flaw allowed users to bypass paywalls. OpenAI announced this temporary halt on July 4, 2023, to address the issue and uphold the rights of content owners. OpenAI aims to rectify the problem and maintain its commitment to the ethical usage of the tool.
In another development, OpenAI has announced the formation of a dedicated team to address potential concerns associated with highly advanced AI systems surpassing human-level intelligence. In a blog post published on July 5, 2023, the company stated that the team will focus on overseeing and effectively managing these systems.
