Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivered a keynote speech at the London Tech Week conference on June 12, 2023, emphasizing the significance of embracing the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI).
In his address, Sunak positioned London as a leading tech hub and proposed that Britain could become the global epicenter for AI regulation and generate substantial interest and anticipation among business leaders.
Sunak also outlined his vision to establish the UK as both the physical and intellectual hub for international AI safety regulation. He acknowledged the dynamic nature of technology and the immense potential of AI; he referred to it as “tectonic plates shifting.” However, he emphasized the critical need to prioritize security in its implementation as a commitment his government is fully dedicated to.
The Prime Minister underscored that as our knowledge about a subject deepens, its sense of being miraculous diminishes. However, when it comes to cutting-edge technology like AI, our understanding of it actually expands our horizons. Sunak highlighted AI’s achievements, including its role in identifying drugs capable of eradicating superbugs and enabling individuals with mobility impairments to regain their ability to walk.
Sunak also noted that his government would convene a meeting later this year to address the risks and management of AI. He noted that the gathering would bring together experts to discuss the challenges associated with AI and devise strategies to mitigate them effectively.
Prime Minister Sunak also addressed concerns regarding job security among workers, emphasizing that the tech industry remains a key priority for economic development. He drew parallels with previous technological revolutions, highlighting how similar challenges were overcome in the past.
UK’s Finance Minister, Jeremy Hunt, also spoke at the conference. He emphasized the pivotal role this period will play in shaping the trajectory of the world for the rest of the century. Hunt expressed his aspirations for the UK to be a force for good in ensuring that technology benefits everyone, outlining the need for appropriate guidelines and frameworks to ensure responsible and inclusive development.
Rather than establishing a new authority dedicated solely to AI regulation, the UK has chosen to distribute regulatory responsibilities for AI among existing organizations. These organizations, responsible for human rights, health and safety, and competition, will collectively oversee the regulation of AI in the country.
During a recent visit to Washington, Prime Minister Sunak secured the support of U.S. President Joe Biden for Britain to host an AI summit. The summit aims to assess the risks associated with AI and explore global cooperation to minimize these risks, further demonstrating the UK’s commitment to international collaboration in AI regulation.
