According to a report by Reuters, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently concluded his visit to Tokyo with a more positive outlook on achieving global collaboration in addressing the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
During his visit, Altman addressed students in Tokyo and highlighted the importance of global collaboration in addressing the existential risks associated with AI. Altman noted that though he was initially skeptical, he now believes there is a good chance of achieving global collaboration, reflecting the potential for international cooperation in addressing the challenges and risks associated with AI. Altman also referred to the history of collaboration between humans and machines in the field of AI and highlighted how cooperation has led to significant advancements in the industry.
Altman had visited Japan earlier in April 2023, and he met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss OpenAI’s interest in establishing a local office in the country. The discussions have been progressing positively, indicating OpenAI’s commitment to engaging with global partners and expanding its presence in key AI markets.
Japan, known for its heavy investments in automation technology in the manufacturing sector, is considered to be lagging behind in consumer-centric AI services. OpenAI’s potential expansion into Japan could bridge this gap, contributing to the development and adoption of AI technologies in the country.
Altman’s recent visit to Tokyo is part of his scheduled global tour, which encompasses several capital cities worldwide. The tour is set to continue, with scheduled visits to Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia, before his return to the United States.
The tour is part of OpenAI’s efforts to actively engage with the growing interest in generative AI and work towards shaping regulations in this emerging field. These visits are also expected to present opportunities for the AI company to explore partnerships, foster collaboration, and continue shaping the global conversation on the future of AI.
