The autonomous territory of the Faroe Islands has launched its first series of a unique collection of digital “crypto stamps.” These stamps, named “Stamps of Maybe,” are digital replicas stored on the blockchain as nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and they also serve as valid postage.
According to the announcement made through the dedicated website for postage issuance, Posta Faroe Islands, this exciting development will take effect from June 23, 2023.
The stamps were created in collaboration with VariusSystems, a provider cloud-based identification solutions. Each physical stamp is accompanied by a corresponding digital twin recorded on the blockchain, providing users with access to the digital version. This integration adds value to each stamp by creating inherent rarity.
Another thing that sets the Faroe Islands’ digital stamp collection apart is its connection to Veurstova Froya, the island’s weather station. The digital renditions of the stamps are influenced by the prevailing weather conditions at the time of activation, introducing a dynamic element to the collection.
To activate the digital twin, each crypto stamp features a QR code that users can scan. The activation timing is entirely in the hands of the users, allowing them to decide whether to activate it immediately or wait for a specific moment. This unique feature transforms the crypto stamp into a digital time capsule.
The Faroe Islands are not the only postal service embracing blockchain technology to revolutionize stamp issuance. PostAG in Austria and PostNL in the Netherlands have also adopted the concept of NFT crypto stamps. PostAG introduced its initial versions on the Ethereum blockchain in 2019 and later launched an updated version in 2021. The updated stamps incorporate near-field communication chip functionality, enabling additional verification measures.
With the introduction of digital “crypto stamps” as NFTs, the Faroe Islands are pushing the boundaries of traditional postage collection methods and embracing the potential of blockchain technology. As other nations join this digital revolution, the future of postage and stamp collecting is set to undergo a significant transformation.
