Romanian authorities have taken a radical approach to AI use and regulation by adopting “Ion,” an AI-powered robot designed to help the government better understand the societal challenges its citizens face.
According to a report by The Financial Times, the Ion AI system will leverage automatic scans of social media, a designated hashtag, and a dedicated online platform to collect data from the public. The collected data is then processed and transformed into reports that will be presented to government officials.
Sebastian Burduja, Romania’s Innovation Minister, remarked that utilizing AI to connect average citizens with their decision-makers is a pioneering experiment that holds immense promise for reinforcing democracy and the credibility of governments.
Burduja further emphasized his desire for the AI system to move beyond mere reporting and evolve into a tool capable of generating policy recommendations based on the insights gleaned from public data.
This development takes place against the backdrop of the European Union’s approval of all-inclusive legislation to oversee the use of AI technology as it prepares for the AI Act. Referred to as the AI Act, this pioneering legislation aims to establish a robust regulatory framework governing various aspects of AI technology. The bill covers regulations related to biometric surveillance, facial recognition, and other AI applications.
According to a report by European lawmakers, they recently approved a more stringent version of the proposed legislation. The lawmakers agreed to ban certain AI tools in public spaces, such as facial recognition and predictive policing, and introduce transparency measures for generative AI applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
In another development, on May 4, 2023, Vice President Kamala Harris held a meeting with CEOs from major AI companies, along with nine top advisers from the Biden administration to discuss the risks associated with AI deployment in the country. The themes of the discussion includes the openness and safety of AI systems and protection against dangerous actors. The participants unanimously agreed to step up efforts to design and enforce adequate safeguards and protections for AI. However, the specific details on the nature the government’s involvement in creating these safeguards were not disclosed.
